MKV files is an open-standard multimedia format that isn’t widely supported by software-based media players. For instance, VLC can play MKVs, but household names like iTunes can’t.

Converting MKVs to MP4s with VLC

VLC media player can recognize and play almost any video format, including MKV, and it’s absolutely free! Not only can you watch MKV files with VLC, but it can also convert your video into a number of formats, including MP4. Here’s how.

Step 1: Download VLC Player

Head over to the VideoLAN’s home page and download VLC. Make sure to read the fine print when installing so you aren’t introducing your computer to any hidden programs or viruses.

Step 2: Select the file you want to convert

Click the Media tab in the upper-left corner, and select Convert/Save. From there, click Add, and find the file on your PC. Once you’ve found your file, go down and hit “Convert/Save.”

Step 3: Specify format and destination, adjust settings, and convert!

Select the Video – H.264 + Mp3 (MP4) option under the profile section. Clicking the tool icon will allow you to fine tune your settings.

Once you’re happy with your settings, specify under “Destination” where you would like VLC to export your file. Then, click Start. The timeline will turn into a progress bar, and once it finishes ,your video is ready!

Option 2: Cloud Convert

There are also a number of websites that allow you to convert any file type for free. We’ll take you through the basics of one site in particular called Cloud Convert. It’s intuitive and easy to use.

Step 1: Upload the file

Navigate over to Cloud Convert’s home page and upload your file. You can either find your file through the “Select file” tab, or you can drop the file into the site itself.

Step 2: Tailor your settings and convert the file

Scroll through the list of audio formats, and select MP4. By default, Cloud Convert will create an MP4 using an H264 video codec, and 192kbps AAC compression. If you want, you can change any of these settings by hitting the wrench icon. Once your settings are in place, hit Start Conversion.


Step 3: Download your MP4

When the conversion process finishes, a green Download icon will pop up, which you can use to retrieve your video.
